In 1983, smoothness – as exemplified by Scaggs, Kenny Loggins (pre- Footloose and post-Messina), Michael McDonald and so on – was out and the old guard were having to modernise to retain their careers as hitmakers. It’s a startlingly accurate take on a form of pop music that was just beginning to recede in popularity at the song’s parent album, Reincarnation, was released. That is to say, it was a live-and-in-the-wild Japanese take on yacht rock.

The use of the orchestra suggest the influence of Barry Gibbs’s production work on Barbra Streisand’s Guilty, the steady mid-tempo rhythm suggests Fleetwood Mac (as does the use of the heartbeat kick drum pattern made ubiquitous by Fleetwood’s use of it on Dreams), there’s a bit of Boz Scaggs in there in the electric piano and soul-derived guitar licks – everything about it signified LA around 1979. Sophisticated, though, I’d have agreed with. It’s a very close take, too, but I’m not sure how the ILM poster heard this and thought, “Hmm, yes, jazzy”. I’d never heard of Yumi Matsutoya, but I was intrigued to listen to a Japanese take on a Western form. Someone posted asking for recommendations for songs by jazz-inflected singer-songwriters I guess they were thinking of stuff in the vein of Paul Simon’s late-seventies work. I first heard this song when reading a thread on the I Love Music message board. Compare that to the commercial fortunes of her western equivalents (even artistic and one-time commercial giants like Joni Mitchell and Carole King) in the same span of time and the scale of those achievements becomes clear. She continues to have hits, and to write them for other artists. She’s sold 42 million records and was the first artist to notch up two million sales in Japan for an album. His last (full) appearance was in April 2020 when yumi did her birth day video.Yumi Matsutoya (born Yumi Arai, and known to her fans as Yuming) has been one of the biggest stars of Japanese pop music for forty years, having released her first single in 1972, aged 18.
* Splenda doesn't show up in Yumi's videos anymore. She says she might do it in a few years with her son's consent. * Despite multiple fans asking to her son's face (and people signing up to patreon just to see him), Yumi is adamant about not showing her son's face on the internet. She announced the pregnancy privately on patreon in February and publicly in March on youtube. Finally in January 2020, Yumi became pregnant. She become disappointed with each failed pregnancy test she got. It wasn't as easy as Yumi thought it would be though. * In 2019, Yumi announced that she and splenda are trying to have a baby. She never revealed why she went to her parents. In August to October 2019, Yumi took a break from all social media except Patreon because she went back to seattle to spend time with her parents. * After the china trip, there were noticable cracks in their relationship and they slowly stopped going out. The China trip videos were incredibly dull though and Yumi spent most of the trip wasting money on hanfu experience shops and looking for ex bfs, with splenda being dragged along for the ride. Yumi also launched her patreon which featured personal stories and other content that wasn't released on her youtube channel.
* In the fall/winter of 2018, Yumi and splenda announced that they were going to China on a trip sponsored by Ali baba. Before this incident, no one knew that splenda had an ex-wife let alone 3 older children. In the summer of 2018, a mysterious woman named Irene blasted splenda on PULL calling him a horrible father and husband to his ex wife. * Eventually, the content of her videos started to get lazier and lazier and she started to lose a lot of views from 2017 onwards.
